The President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, and the Consul General of the Kingdom of Morocco in the islands, Fatiha El Kamouri, have emphasised the importance of continuing the existing good relations, based on dialogue and cooperation.
This was reported by the regional government, which added that a meeting between the two took place on 22 December at the Presidency headquarters in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Torres said that between the Canary Islands and Morocco there are matters of particular importance, such as the phenomenon of migration and its control at source, an issue on which the consul and the president agree that there has been an improvement.
He pointed out that the latest data show that the volume of boats arriving has fallen by 38% compared to last year. In addition, the number of people has also fallen from 22,413 to 15,440 (data up to 21 December 2022). Accommodation resources in the Canary Islands are at 28% occupancy at the moment.
Finally, the president, who is planning an official visit to Morocco at the beginning of 2023, stressed the importance of commercial and strategic relations between the Canary Islands and Morocco.
