Canary Islands airports conclude 2022 with 43.4 million passengers, thus recovering 96.5% of all traffic

The eight Aena airports in the Canary Islands concluded the year 2022 with 43,473,393 passengers, which represents a recovery of 96.5 percent of traffic in relation to the pre-pandemic period, in 2019.

Of the total number of passengers registered in 2022 at Canary Islands aerodromes, 43,045,911 were passengers on commercial flights, of which 17,882,321 travelled on domestic flights, recovering 98.3 percent of the traffic compared to 2019, and 25,163,590 travelled on international routes, recovering 94.8 percent.

During the whole year the number of aircraft movements was 406,695, one percent less than in 2019, and 31,197 tonnes of freight were transported, which fell by 16.2 percent compared to the pre-pandemic period, according to data provided by Aena.

By airports, Gran Canaria airport recorded the highest number of Canary Islands airport passengers in 2022 with 12,417,699, which represents a recovery of 93.6 percent compared to 2019; followed by Tenerife South airport, with 10,821,703 passengers, which also recovered 96.9 percent of traffic.

It is followed by César Manrique-Lanzarote airport, which recorded an increase of 0.8 per cent with 7,350,451 passengers; Fuerteventura airport, with 5,641,500 visitors (+0.1 per cent); and Fuerteventura airport, with 5,641,500 visitors (+0.1 per cent). 500 visitors (+0.1%); Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna, with 5,566,243 (-4.7%); La Palma, with 1,306,947 (-11.9%); El Hierro aerodrome, with 273,687 (+1.8%); and La Gomera, with 95,163 passengers (+22.7%).

On the other hand, with regard to the number of total operations, the Canary Islands airport that recorded the highest number of movements in 2022 was Gran Canaria airport with 119,530 (-5.5%) followed by Tenerife South with 75,605 operations (+7.6%) and Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna aerodrome, with 68,958 (-8.5%).

Likewise, 31,197 tonnes of cargo were transported in 2022, which implied a drop in freight traffic of 16.2 per cent in relation to 2019, a drop that is related to the fact that “a very significant part” of the goods that are usually transported in cargo aircraft have been transported in commercial passenger aircraft.
