On 6 and 7 February, the Hotel Escuela Santa Cruz, on the island of Tenerife, will host the 2nd Canary Islands Marine Tourism Forum, as part of the ERDF-funded project ‘Ecoáreas Mardetodos’, promoted by the Regional Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Trade of the Government of the Canary Islands through the Directorate-General for Tourism Organisation and Promotion.
The main objective, according to a press release from the Regional Ministry, is to develop the tourism potential of small-scale fishing in the archipelago. Experts from Spain’s public administrations, as well as managers and representatives of various companies with experience in products related to tourism, the sea and fishing, among others, will take part in the Forum.
The seafaring exhibition ‘A sea of art’ will also be inaugurated and will be open to the public at the Hotel Escuela Santa Cruz for the duration of the meeting.
This second Forum will be inaugurated by the Minister of Tourism, Industry and Trade of the Government of the Canary Islands, Yaiza Castilla, at 09.30 on Monday, 6 February, followed by the Director General of Tourism Planning and Promotion of the Government of the Canary Islands and CEO of Hecansa, Ciprián Rivas, who will take part in the presentation of the book ‘Embarcaciones históricas y tradicionales de Canarias. Construcción naval y carpintería de ribera en las Islas’ together with its author, Daniel Rodríguez Zaragoza.
Afterwards, the sociologist of the Government of the Canary Islands, José Luis Cárdenes Martín, will introduce the seafaring heritage of the archipelago.
The meeting will also include the participation of Álvaro Díaz de la Paz, professor of Economics at the University of La Laguna, and the Lanzarote shipwrights Agustín Jordán, Gregorio Martín, Gilberto Sánchez and Alejandro Montesdeoca, as well as the naval engineer Ignacio Fernández Vial, the designer Francisco Muñoz and the shipwright Julián García, among many others.
Pilar Almeida, from the Directorate General for Economic Affairs with the European Union, will take part in the second day, which will begin on 7 February at 09.00, as well as the manager of Bluscus, Pablo Mariño; the president of the Provincial Federation of Brotherhoods of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Víctor Díaz; the founder of Intramar, Isidro Mariño, and the director of the Faktoria Albaola Museum in San Sebastián, Xabier Agote.
