Weather in the Canaries: several islands on prealert for snowfall, rain and storms

Caused by an isolated depression at high level, also known as DANA, the pre-alert for snow on the summits will come into force at 01.00 this Sunday.

The Directorate General for Security and Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has declared today a pre-alert situation for snowfall on the islands of Tenerife and La Palma. The action is based on the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) which predicts an isolated depression at high levels in the Canary Islands, and in application of the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for Adverse Weather Events PEFMA (Decree 18/2014 of 20 March).

THE CANARIES: PREALERT DUE TO SNOWFALLS

The pre-alert for snowfall on the peaks of these two islands will come into force at 01.00 hours this Sunday, 5 February, and no end date has been set. There is therefore a probability of precipitation in the form of snow, especially from midnight on Sunday, from an altitude of 2,000 metres above sea level.

THE CANARIES: PRE-ALERT DUE TO RAINFALL

The Canary Islands Government has also activated a pre-alert for rainfall affecting the islands of La Palma, Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote from 01.00 hours today. In this sense, very heavy and localised showers are expected, derived from convective activity, with developing clouds and scattered thunderstorms.

This situation, according to the Directorate General for Security and Emergencies, will mainly affect the northwest of La Palma, and also Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura throughout the day on Saturday.

THE CANARIES: THUNDERSTORM WARNING FOR LANZAROTE

To all this must be added the yellow warning for storms that AEMET has placed over the island of Lanzarote, which is active from 12:00 to 19:59 hours today: “It will especially affect inland areas and northern and western slopes, and may be accompanied by small hail”.
