Residents of the Canary Islands made just over 5.6 million trips last year, which represents 3.3% of the total, with an expenditure of 2,192.3 million, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE). During this travel, the Canarians spent the most among all the autonomous communities with 387 euros, at a rate of 80 euros per day.
Nationally, trips made by residents in Spain increased by 19.9% in 2022 compared to 2021 and the total expenditure made on these trips soared by 54.6% to 50,292 million euros. Specifically, Spaniards undertook 171.4 million trips in 2022, while the associated overnight stays totalled 745.8 million, up 19.1%. The main destination of 90.6% of the trips undertaken by Spaniards last year was the national territory, and 9.4% were to foreign countries.
Domestic trips accounted for 81.6% of overnight stays and 70.5% of total expenditure, with an average daily expenditure of 58 euros. In contrast, trips abroad accounted for 18.4% of overnight stays and 29.5% of total expenditure, with an average daily expenditure of 108 euros. The main reasons for travelling were leisure (51.6% of the total) and visits to family or friends (34.2%).
According to the INE, leisure trips accounted for 59.8% of total expenditure, with an average daily expenditure of 75 euros, although the highest average daily expenditure was for business trips (121 euros). Residents opted for non-market accommodation in 58.4% of all trips. These trips, which accounted for 59.3% of overnight stays, had the lowest average daily expenditure (35 euros). The highest average daily expenditure (145 euros) was for trips with hotel accommodation.
For domestic trips, expenditure on accommodation accounted for the highest percentage of total expenditure (26.7%), followed by expenditure on bars and restaurants (25.6%) and transport (21.5%). For trips abroad, the item with the highest share of the total was transport (30.4%), followed by expenditure on accommodation (21.9%) and on bars and restaurants (17.3%).
By quarters, the highest average daily expenditure was recorded for domestic trips in the second and fourth quarters (69 euros in both) and for trips abroad in the fourth quarter (141 euros).
ANDALUSIA, MAIN TRAVEL DESTINATION FOR SPANIARDS
Andalusia was the destination for 16.4% of all trips made in 2022, followed by Catalonia (14.1%) and Valencian Region (10.5%). The destinations visited to a lesser extent were La Rioja (1% of the total), Community of Navarre (1.2%) and Region of Murcia (2.0%).
The highest average daily expenditure was for trips to the Canary Islands (87 euros), Madrid Community (84) and Basque Country (82). On the other hand, the lowest average values were for Castile and Leon (43 euros) and Murcia Region and Castile-La Mancha (both with 45).
Residents in Community of Madrid accumulated the highest percentage of trips in 2022 (18.4% of the total), followed by residents in Catalonia (17.6%) and Andalusia (14.6%). The highest average daily expenditures were made by residents in the Canary Islands (80 euros per day), Catalonia (75) and Galicia (72). In contrast, the lowest were in the Region of Murcia (59 euros), La Rioja (60) and Aragon (62).
37.9 MILLION TRIPS IN THE FOURTH QUARTER
Residents in Spain made 37.9 million trips in the fourth quarter of 2022, 4.2% more than in the same period of 2021, and spent 10,563.2 million euros, an increase of 29.8% compared to the same period of 2021.
The main destination of 89.3% of trips was the national territory, with an increase of 0.9% compared to the fourth quarter of the previous year. In turn, trips abroad, which represent 10.7% of the total, increased by 44.5%. The most popular regions for resident trips between October and December last year were Andalusia (15.6% of the total), Catalonia (12.8%) and Castile and Leon (9.6%).
In terms of expenditure, domestic trips rose by 12.2% and those abroad by 83.1%. Average daily expenditure stood at 69 euros for domestic trips and 141 euros for trips abroad. The highest average daily expenditure was recorded for trips to Community of Madrid (102 euros), Canary Islands (98) and Basque Country (91). On the other hand, the lowest average daily expenditure was in Valencian Region (55 euros) and in Castile and Leon and Region of Murcia Region (56 in both).
