Playa Paraiso, Playa del Duque and Golf del Sur, Tenerife’s top performers in 2022

Ashotel's Tourism Competitiveness and Sustainability Observatory has analysed such metrics as overnight stays, travellers hosted, hotel revenues and average occupancy among Tenerife's most popular tourist spots.

The Tenerife tourist spots Playa Paraíso (Adeje), Playa del Duque (Adeje) and Golf del Sur (San Miguel de Abona) were, overall, the best performers, according to the tourism data for 2022 as compared to 2019, the pre-pandemic reference year.

Overnight stays, travellers accommodated, hotel revenues and average occupancy are some of the factors analysed by Ashotel’s Tourism Competitiveness and Sustainability Observatory, with data from the Tourist Accommodation Survey of the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (Istac).

With regard to overnight stays, of the total of the 17 tourist spots analysed in Tenerife, Golf del Sur is the one that experienced the highest percentage increase in 2022 compared to 2019, with a rise of 24.77%, from 1.05 million overnight stays in 2019 to 1.31 million in 2022. Playa Paraíso grew by almost 19%, Playa del Duque by 10.5% and Los Gigantes by 10.3%.

On the other hand, among the 13 tourist spots that have not yet surpassed the 2019 figures, those with the sharpest percentage drops are Costa del Silencio, in Arona (-75.5%), the historic centre of Puerto de la Cruz (-35.8%), Callao Salvaje, in Adeje (-32.1%) and El Médano, in Granadilla de Abona (-31.6%).

However, compared to the data for 2021, the 17 tourist spots analysed already exceeded these numbers in 2022, not only in terms of overnight stays, but also in the main variables analysed by the Ashotel Observatory.

In terms of overnight travellers, the areas with the best percentage performance were also Golf del Sur, with an increase of 38.5%; Playa Paraíso (25.2%); Playa del Duque (15%) and Los Gigantes (10.2%). However, if we take into account absolute volume data, Las Américas (Arona) registered the highest number of travellers accommodated in 2022 of the tourist spots analysed in Tenerife, with 916,885, a figure that nevertheless represents a fall of almost -3% compared to 2019; Costa Adeje follows, with a total of 695,953 travellers accommodated and a fall of -5.6%.

Among the most notable percentage drops in the number of travellers accommodated, the data coincides with the overnight stays and places the tourist spot of Costa del Silencio with the sharpest drop (-72%), followed by Callao Salvaje (-35.7%), Torviscas-Fañabé Alto (-25.1%) and the historic centre of Puerto de la Cruz (-24.4%).

In relation to the average occupancy rate, all the tourist areas exceeded 50% in 2022, except Costa del Silencio, whose behaviour coincides with other indicators and remained at an average of 22.8%. Among the highest average occupancies last year were Playa Paraíso (88.8%), Playa del Duque (82.6%) and Golf del Sur (80.3%). The lowest average occupancy rates in 2022, apart from the aforementioned Costa del Silencio, are those of Los Cristianos (55.5%), El Médano (58.2%) and the historic centre of Puerto de la Cruz (59.3%).

Finally, with regard to total income in Tenerife’s tourist spots, Playa Paraíso, with an increase of 74.7% compared to 2019, Golf del Sur (37.9%) and Playa del Duque (27.2%) also lead the ranking. These three tourist spots added up to almost 464 million euros in revenue last year. Among the most notable falls, the same pattern is also repeated: Costa del Silencio (-58.9%), historic Puerto de la Cruz (-38.6%) and Callao Salvaje (-19.4%) with respect to the reference pre-pandemic year.

TOP 10 IN THE CANARY ISLANDS

In absolute figures, among the top 10 Canary Islands tourist spots with the best accommodation indicators last year, Playa del Inglés (San Bartolomé de Tirajana), Las Américas in Arona and Costa Adeje stand out in terms of overnight stays and travellers accommodated, while in terms of total income, the top 3 of the whole archipelago are Playa del Inglés, Playa del Duque and Las Américas in Arona.

However, if we take into account the behaviour with respect to 2019, the pre-pandemic reference year, the highest percentage increase in travellers accommodated within these 10 tourist spots was that of Playa del Duque, with an increase of 15%, followed by Matagorda-Los Pocillos, in Tías, Lanzarote (10.9%) and Esquinzo-Butihondo, in Pájara, Fuerteventura (5.83%).

With regard to the percentage increases in overnight stays, the top 3 are as follows: Playa del Duque (10.5%), Matagorda-Los Pocillos (9.8%) and Esquinzo-Butihondo (1.38%). Meanwhile, in terms of total income, the order is as follows: Playa del Duque (27.2%), Esquinzo Butihondo (19.9%), Meloneras, in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Gran Canaria (15.4%) and Matagorda-Los Pocillos (15.1%).
