High temperatures are back: the Canary Islands could reach 37 degrees today

According to Aemet, on Tuesday, there is a possibility of temperatures reaching 37 degrees in the Tejeda area of Gran Canaria, as well as in the midlands to the west, south, and southeast of the island.

In response to this, the Directorate General for Security and Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government has declared a state of alert in both provinces, specifically from an altitude of 200 meters above sea level.

The alert came into effect at 08:00 on Tuesday and is based on the forecast of high maximum temperatures, potentially exceeding 37 degrees in Gran Canaria, and reaching 34 degrees on the islands of El Hierro, La Gomera, La Palma, and Tenerife.

Furthermore, moderate northeast winds are expected, with strong gusts on the southeast and northwest slopes of the islands. Below 400 meters, the trade winds will continue to blow.

FORECAST BY ISLANDS:

LANZAROTE

The weather forecast indicates a mixture of cloudy and clear skies, with periods of medium and high clouds. In the early morning, there will be low clouds along the north and west coasts. There may be a slight presence of haze, primarily affecting inland areas, particularly in the latter part of the day. Minimum temperatures will remain relatively stable. High temperatures will slightly increase, reaching around 32 ºC in certain inland and southern areas. The wind will be moderate from the north-east, occasionally becoming strong in inland regions, mainly during the afternoon. There is a possibility of occasional very strong gusts in the late afternoon.

FUERTEVENTURA

The weather forecast predicts mainly partly cloudy or clear skies, with intervals of medium and high clouds. In the early morning, there will be low clouds along the west coast. There might be a slight presence of haze, primarily affecting inland areas, particularly in the latter part of the day. Minimum temperatures will remain relatively stable. There will be a slight to moderate increase in maximum temperatures, with the potential to locally exceed 34 ºC, especially in inland areas in the south.

The wind will be moderate from the north-east, occasionally becoming strong in the southern interior and south of Jandía, primarily during the early hours of the morning and from midday onwards. Occasional very strong gusts in the late hours cannot be ruled out.

GRAN CANARIA

On the northern coasts, there will be intervals of clouds, with partly cloudy skies prevailing in the afternoon. In other areas, expect partly cloudy or clear skies, with occasional intervals of medium and high clouds. There will be a slight presence of haze, primarily affecting the midlands and high areas, particularly in the afternoon and onwards. Temperatures along the northern coasts will experience little change. In the rest of the island, temperatures will rise slightly to moderately, with noticeable increases in the midlands and high areas.

The Tejeda basin and the midlands of the west, south, and southeast may reach temperatures of 36 ºC, occasionally even reaching 37 ºC. In other areas, temperatures will range from 30 to 32 ºC. The wind will be moderate from the north-east, blowing strongly on the south-eastern and north-western slopes, with occasional very strong gusts, especially in the afternoon. Breezy conditions will predominantly be experienced on the southwest coasts.

TENERIFE

Expect cloudy intervals on the northern coasts, with a tendency towards partly cloudy skies in the afternoon, particularly in the northwest. In other areas, anticipate partly cloudy or clear conditions, occasionally accompanied by medium and high clouds. There may be light haze in the high areas, primarily in the afternoon and onwards. Temperatures along the northeastern coastal areas will remain relatively stable. In other areas, temperatures will experience a slight to moderate rise, noticeable in the midlands and high areas. The southern midlands may locally reach temperatures of 34 ºC, with a lower probability in the southeast of the Metropolitan Area.

Generally, temperatures will be around 30 ºC in the rest of the areas. The wind will be moderate from the north-east, becoming strong in the south-east and north-west regions. There is a possibility of very strong gusts from the late afternoon onwards. Breezy conditions can be expected on the west and north coasts. On the central peaks, the wind will be moderate from the southwest, shifting to light to moderate from the west during the morning.

LA GOMERA

Expect partly cloudy or clear skies for the most part, with occasional cloudy intervals on the northern coasts during the early and late hours. There is a possibility of slight haze at high altitudes. Temperatures will experience a slight to moderate rise, particularly in the maximum temperatures of the midlands and highlands, while coastal temperatures will remain relatively stable. Some areas, especially in the southern half, may locally reach or surpass 30 ºC. The wind will be moderate from the northeast, with stronger gusts expected in the extreme northwest and on the eastern slope. Occasional very strong gusts cannot be ruled out, especially from the afternoon onwards. Breezy conditions will be felt on the southwest coast.

LA PALMA

In the rest of the island, temperatures will experience a slight to moderate rise, particularly noticeable in the high areas of the midlands and highlands. Some areas, especially in the midlands of the southwest, may locally reach or exceed 30 ºC. The wind will be moderate from the northeast, with intervals of strong winds in the extreme northwest and on the southeastern slope, particularly from the afternoon onwards. Breezy conditions will be present on the west coast.
