Canary Islands airports register 17.9% more passengers than in 2022

23,453,741 people have visited the Canary Islands in the first half of the year.

The Canary Islands’ airports have seen a total of 23,453,741 passengers in the first half of 2023, marking a significant increase of 17.9% compared to the accumulated data from January to June last year.


According to Aena, out of the total number of passengers on commercial flights, 13,892,430 traveled internationally, showing a notable growth of 18.2% compared to the previous year’s figures. Additionally, 9,307,123 passengers flew domestically, representing a 17.3% increase.

During this period, there were 210,499 aircraft movements, indicating a 10% rise from the same period in 2022. However, the transportation of goods experienced a decrease of 6.8%, with 14,934 tonnes transported compared to the corresponding months of the previous year.

Among the different airports, Gran Canaria recorded the highest number of passengers in the first six months of the year, reaching 6,810,891, which signifies a 19.6% increase compared to January to June 2022. Tenerife South Airport follows closely with 6,071,494 passengers, demonstrating a growth of 19.5% compared to the previous year. César Manrique-Lanzarote registered 3,938,547 passengers (an increase of 17.9%), Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna had 2,903,097 passengers (a 15.2% increase), Fuerteventura had 2,900,495 passengers (a 14% increase), La Palma had 646,254 passengers (a 15.4% increase), El Hierro had 133,525 passengers (a 10.7% increase), and La Gomera experienced the highest percentage growth with 49,438 passengers, marking a significant 31.3% increase compared to the same months of 2022.

CANARY ISLANDS: 3.6 MILLION PASSENGERS IN JUNE

In the month of June alone, the Canary Islands airports recorded 3,615,399 passengers, surpassing the figures for the same month in 2022 by 5.6%.

Out of the total number of passengers registered in June, 3,589,409 were passengers on commercial flights, with 1,925,078 traveling internationally (5% more than in June 2022) and 1,664,331 traveling domestically (6.6% more than last year).

June saw 33,252 aircraft movements, which is a 5.7% increase compared to 2022. However, the transportation of cargo experienced a decrease of 8.8%, with 2,336 tonnes transported compared to June of the previous year.

During June, Gran Canaria Airport recorded 988,845 passengers, marking a 6.7% increase compared to June 2022. Tenerife South followed with 872,101 passengers (an increase of 8.4%), César Manrique-Lanzarote with 656,954 passengers (an increase of 8.3%), Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna with 516,756 passengers (a 6.3% increase), Fuerteventura with 447,812 passengers (a 0.9% decrease), La Palma with 101,297 passengers (a 13.2% decrease), El Hierro with 23,049 passengers (a 1.1% increase), and La Gomera with 8,585 passengers, recording the highest percentage growth of 21.3% compared to the same month in 2022.
