The Island Council of La Palma participated in the inauguration of the Canary Islands’ first tourist-fishing boat, held at the port of Tazacorte. This new offering aims to provide both locals and foreigners with an opportunity to experience a traditional practice deeply intertwined with the island’s heritage.
During the maiden voyage, Sergio Rodríguez, President of The Island Council, accompanied by Raquel Rebollo, Island Councillor for Tourism, Alberto Paz, Councillor for Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, and Miriam Perestelo, Head of Economic Promotion and Digital Transformation, visited the boat.
Raquel Rebollo highlighted the importance of having a distinct tourist offering on the island that connects the two primary pillars of La Palma’s socio-economic development: tourism and the fishing sector. These aspects are an inherent part of the island’s identity and thus add to its allure.
Alberto Paz, Councillor for the Primary Sector, emphasized that this is the first boat on La Palma offering this activity, providing tourists with the opportunity to accompany the crew on a day’s fishing journey. This allows visitors to observe the work of local fishermen, experience marine life up close, learn about fishing gear, and admire the island’s coastal landscapes.
The fishing sector also aims, through this initiative, to promote the concept of “fishing less but better paid,” showcasing the value of their catch and illustrating the effort involved in this traditional primary activity.
The Agencia Insular del Mar played a crucial role in promoting this endeavor, facilitating the necessary administrative procedures and ensuring compliance with safety regulations and equipment.
Currently, La Palma has two authorized boats for this activity, with a third one in the final stages of completing formalities. This new offering adds to the island’s diverse attractions, providing visitors with an authentic and enriching experience deeply rooted in local culture.
