Foreigners’ top choice for residence in the Canary Islands revealed

In the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, three municipalities have a greater proportion of foreigners than locals seeking residency in the Canary Islands.

At a national level, 18 municipalities, including the Canary Islands, with populations under 5,000 have garnered more attention from foreign prospective residents than from nationals. This phenomenon underscores the magnetic appeal that Spain holds for foreign buyers seeking property in the country.

As per a study conducted by Idealista, a striking commonality among the towns most coveted by foreigners on the platform is their proximity to coastlines or seas, hence the inevitable inclusion of Canary Islands’ towns.

According to the data drawn from visits on the real estate portal during June and July, Ponga, situated in Asturias, tops the list for towns with the highest overseas property searches, surpassing interest from nationals, with 69% of visits originating internationally.

Claiming the second spot is Cala d’Or in the Balearic Islands (63%), followed by Competa in Malaga (61%) and Rubia in Ourense (60%), securing the fourth position. The ranks continue with Garafía in the Santa Cruz de Tenerife province (57%), Deyá in the Balearic Islands, and Vallehermoso, also within the Santa Cruz de Tenerife province.

With 56% foreign search interest, Canillas de Albaida in Malaga, Valle Gran Rey in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Sayalonga in Malaga, and Benitachell in Alicante come next.

Subsequent positions belong to Frigiliana in Malaga (55%), Hondón de las Nieves in Alicante (54%), Algueña in Alicante (53%), and Jete in Granada (52%).

Concluding the list, Llíber in Alicante, Bédar in Almería, and Arboleas in Almería each share 51% of their search activity from abroad.

THE CANARY ISLANDS’ MOST DESIRED RESIDENTIAL TOWN AMONG FOREIGNERS

According to the data from the Idealista platform, the municipality within the Canary Islands with less than 5,000 residents that attracts the most foreign searches is situated in the Santa Cruz de Tenerife province, specifically on La Gomera Island – Vallehermoso.

The Canary Islands boast breathtaking natural landscapes, including four of Spain’s sixteen national parks, among which is the Garajonay National Park in La Gomera, renowned for its lush laurel forest that covers 40 square kilometers.

Given these attributes, it’s no wonder that a municipality like Vallehermoso is in high demand among foreign property buyers.
