Famtàstic Festival: a combination of film, gastronomy, art and music

Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Barcelona serve as the host locations for the Famtàstic festival, encompassing the enlightening exhibition '100 Square Moons'.

The itinerant Famtàstic festival, set to take place from September 15 to October 14 in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Barcelona, will present the captivating collection of short films titled “Interstellar.” This screening amalgamates elements of entertainment and education, blending humor with drama, reality with science fiction. Famtàstic is enriched by collaboration with The Seoul Yeongdeungpo International Extreme-Short Image & Film Festival from South Korea.

The festival (www.famtastic.es) will showcase a musical performance by Resonance, the talented Canarian producer Javier Pérez Rodríguez. He crafts landscapes and sonic structures that merge a spectrum of influences, spanning cinematic ambient and shoegaze to danceable tech-house and minimal beats.

Within the culinary realm, Diana Marcelino, the skilled chef behind El Secreto de Chimiche restaurant in Granadilla de Abona—a place honored with a new Sol from the Repsol Guide—joins the festival program.

Housed within an erstwhile tomato packing plant, this establishment is devoted to excellence, focusing on the finest local ingredients, especially the unique chasnero variety. Its cuisine is both refined and straightforward, embracing grilled dishes while highlighting the intrinsic quality of the produce. The tasting menus for Famtàstic will be co-crafted with astrophysicist Alfred Rosenberg González from the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC).

The festival will also host the IAC’s exhibition, “100 Square Moons.” This educational display has been conceived as part of the Niépce project, marking nearly two centuries since the first historical photographic images were captured. Through this initiative, astronomy pays homage to photography for its role in multiplying the data derived from telescopes.

Famtàstic, in partnership with entities like the Elder Museum of Science and Technology (Gran Canaria), Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC), and the Nino Díaz Foundation (Tías, Lanzarote), offers a unique opportunity to engage with the arts from a fresh perspective. The festival aims to surprise, discover, experience, and revel in unconventional cultural expressions such as short films, performances, and contemporary art.

The organizers note, “These expressions might not individually capture the attention of a wide audience, but when combined within the context of Famtàstic, they take on a distinct and accessible meaning, challenging preconceived notions like ‘this isn’t for me’.”
