Hotel stays in the Canary Islands declined by 4.1% in August, totaling 6.5 million

Hotel overnight stays in the Canary Islands exceeded 6.5 million in August, a 4.1% drop from the previous year. This decline was driven by a 5.6% decrease in stays by Spanish residents, while foreign travelers saw a 3.5% reduction in their stays.

In August, hotel overnight stays in the Canary Islands exceeded 6.5 million, reflecting a 4.1% decrease compared to the same month in 2022 when there were 6.78 million overnight stays. Of the total overnight stays in the archipelago, 1.33 million were made by residents in Spain, marking a 5.6% year-on-year decline, while 5.17 million were by foreign travelers, representing a 3.5% decrease.


Nationwide, hotel overnight stays amounted to 46.6 million, marking a 1.2% increase compared to the same month in 2022. In August, hotels invoiced an average of 136.5 euros per occupied room, reflecting a 6.7% increase year-on-year.

The average length of stay decreased by 1.2% compared to August 2022, standing at 3.5 overnight stays per traveler. For the first eight months of 2023, hotel overnight stays in Spain increased by 8.8% compared to the same period in the previous year and surpassed the figures of the first eight months of 2019.

The Balearic Islands had the highest occupancy rate by bedplaces in August at 89.5%, followed by the Basque Country with 80.9%. Palma-Calvià achieved the highest occupancy rate by bedplaces at 90.1%, with the highest weekend occupancy rate at 90.3%. The Island of Mallorca registered the highest number of overnight stays in August at 8.2 million.

HOTEL STAYS: UNITED KINGDOM AND GERMANY IN THE LEAD

The United Kingdom and Germany were the leading source markets, accounting for 25.5% and 15.7%, respectively, of the total number of overnight stays by non-residents in hotel establishments in August.

Hotel prices saw an annual rate increase of 6.3% in August, which is 7 points lower than the same month in 2022 and 0.1 points higher than the previous month. The highest price increase with respect to August 2022 was recorded in the Balearic Islands at 9.6%, while Extremadura experienced a decrease with an annual variation rate of -0.2%.

In terms of hotel categories, three-star gold establishments saw the highest price increase at 11.2%. The average daily hotel revenue per occupied room (ADR) reached €136.5 in August, reflecting a 6.7% increase year-on-year. The average daily revenue per available room (RevPAR) reached €108.2, marking a 6.8% increase. By category, the ADR was €303.3 for five-star hotels, €143.7 for four-star hotels, and €120.1 for three-star hotels, with RevPAR figures of €222.5, €122.3, and €99.4, respectively.

Estepona had the highest ADR, with an average daily revenue per occupied room of €302.9, and the highest RevPar at €254.8.
