The Canary Islands are currently experiencing an unrelenting wave of “exceptional heat,” offering no respite, and this hot weather is set to continue with maximum temperatures of at least 34 degrees Celsius until the upcoming weekend (October 14 and 15).
For over a week, the Canary Islands have been grappling with unusual weather conditions, with temperatures soaring above 36 degrees Celsius in many regions of the islands, even approaching 40 degrees, accompanied by intense haze.
Yesterday, nine out of the ten highest temperatures recorded in the entire country were in the Canary Islands. In locations such as Adeje and Güímar, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) registered scorching highs of 38 degrees Celsius, nearly matching temperatures in Gran Canarian towns like Tasarte in La Aldea de San Nicolás, which reached 37.9 degrees, and Arucas with 37.8 degrees. Zumarraga, a town in the Basque region of Guipúzcoa, hit 37.6 degrees, surpassing La Graciosa with 37.5 degrees and Tenerife South Airport with 37.1 degrees.
Temperatures exceeding 36 degrees were observed in El Matorral, San Bartolomé Tirajana (36.5 degrees), La Dama in Vallehermoso (La Gomera, 36.5 degrees), Arico (Tenerife) and Mogan (Gran Canaria, 36.3 degrees), as well as Antigua (Fuerteventura) with 36 degrees.
In contrast, the lowest temperatures recorded yesterday were in the Teide National Park, with Izaña at 13.3 degrees and 13.7 degrees at the Parador. Roque de los Muchachos in La Palma registered 14.6 degrees.
Heatwave alert in the Canary Islands
A heat warning is in effect for all the islands, except La Palma and the northern part of Tenerife, due to maximum temperatures. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), temperatures could reach up to 36 degrees in the eastern, southern, and western regions of Tenerife, with the possibility of exceeding 37 degrees.
Meanwhile, La Gomera may experience temperatures of up to 35 degrees, primarily affecting the western and southern slopes, as well as Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and El Hierro in the midlands and low-lying areas. In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the heat will affect inland areas. Tomorrow, maximum temperatures are expected to hover around 34 degrees. On El Hierro, La Gomera, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria, it will impact the midlands and coastal areas, while on Fuerteventura, it will affect inland and southern regions.
Sunday witnessed three records for the highest minimum temperatures in October at the airports of Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, as well as in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Gando saw the thermometer not dip below 27.7 degrees, surpassing the previous record of 26.6 degrees set in 1951. César Manrique recorded a minimum of 27.6 degrees, higher than the 27.2 degrees recorded in 1983. In Santa Cruz, the minimum temperature was 26.1 degrees, breaking the previous record of 26 degrees set in 1983.
