Canary Islands Government offers 4 tips to prevent heat stroke and more

During the heatwave in the Canary Islands, it's important to reduce physical activity, especially in the middle of the day. Stay well-hydrated, opt for smaller meals, and avoid engaging in high-intensity activities alone.

The Department of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity, and Sport, led by Poli Suárez, has taken measures in recent days to safeguard the well-being of the educational community during the ongoing heatwave in the Canary Islands. As a precautionary measure, classes have been suspended for October 11th and 13th to prevent children from experiencing the adverse effects of the extreme heat in the classroom.

Additionally, the Vice-Ministry of Physical Activity and Sport has issued guidelines for the Canary Islands sports community to protect themselves from the persisting heatwave, expected to continue until at least Saturday. They have encouraged the postponement of popular sporting events, especially those involving young and elderly participants. The Deporte Canario is disseminating recommendations for physical activity during this period through its communication channels, emphasizing their significance in preventing heat-related health issues.

The recommendations for the Canary Islands include:

  1. Reducing physical activity for non-professional athletes.
  2. Avoiding sports and physical exertion during the hottest parts of the day.
  3. Refraining from engaging in high-intensity activities alone.
  4. If possible, avoiding outdoor sports, especially in the sun and during midday hours.
  5. Wearing protective headgear when exposed to the sun and opting for lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing.
  6. Maintaining proper hydration by drinking small amounts of water consistently throughout the day, with increased intake during physical activity.
  7. Opting for light and fresh foods, including fruits and salads, especially during hot weather and before engaging in sports.

These measures aim to ensure the well-being of individuals while adapting their routines to extreme temperatures. The Vice-Ministry is actively collaborating with regional sports federations across the Canary Islands to provide support and guidance for their official competitions scheduled during this extended weekend.
