Unemployment in the Canary Islands drops by 600 individuals during the summer, but 1,900 jobs lost

In the last quarter, employment in the Canary Islands decreased by 0.13%, but it saw a significant annual increase of 5.30%.

In the last quarter, employment in the Canary Islands declined by 0.13%, resulting in a decrease of 1,900 employed individuals. However, over the past year, employment in the region has grown significantly by 5.30%, adding 25,000 jobs, according to data from the EPA released by the INE. Despite this annual growth, the unemployment rate in the Canary Islands stands at 15.23%, making it the third-highest in the country.


Currently, the Canary Islands have 997,800 employed individuals, with 179,200 people unemployed, and an activity rate of 59.13%.

The most substantial increases in employment during the quarter were observed in the Valencia Region (adding 80,700 jobs), Catalonia (62,400), and the Balearic Islands (35,200). Conversely, the largest decreases occurred in Comunidad de Madrid (a reduction of 15,700 jobs), Andalucía (-3,800), and País Vasco (-2,800).

In terms of relative growth, the Communities with the most significant quarterly employment increases were Illes Balears (5.50%), Comunitat Valenciana (3.60%), and Cataluña (1.71%).

Over the past year, nearly all Autonomous Communities saw an increase in employment, with the most substantial growth in Catalonia (adding 156,500 jobs), Comunitat Valenciana (130,000), and Comunidad de Madrid (119,300). The only exception was Castilla y León, which saw a decrease of -2,500 jobs.

In relative terms, the Communities with the highest annual employment growth rates were Comunitat Valenciana (5.93%), Canarias (5.30%), and Región de Murcia (4.74%). Castile and Leon was the only one with a negative rate (-0.25%).

Looking at unemployment data, the largest quarterly decreases in the number of unemployed individuals occurred in Castile-La Mancha (a reduction of -11,900), Illes Balears (-8,400), and Aragon (-5,600). In contrast, the largest quarterly increases were seen in Comunidad de Madrid (an additional 37,600 unemployed), Andalusia (30,700), and Principado de Asturias and País Vasco (13,400 each).

On an annual basis, the largest reductions in the number of unemployed individuals were observed in Comunitat Valenciana (-31,700), Canarias (-25,000), and Castilla-La Mancha (-24,900). In contrast, the largest increases in unemployment over the last 12 months were recorded in Andalusia (an additional 7,000 unemployed persons), Castile and Leon (6,700), and Extremadura (4,100).

For unemployment rates, Illes Balears (5.72%), Cantabria (7.48%), and Aragon (7.77%) reported the lowest rates during this quarter. Conversely, Andalusia (18.67%), Extremadura (16.50%), and the Canary Islands (15.23%) had the highest rates.

Finally, in terms of activity rates, the largest quarterly increases were seen in Comunitat Valenciana (79,500 more active individuals), Catalonia (71,000), and Andalusia (26,900). On the other hand, the largest decreases occurred in Aragon (3,600 fewer active individuals) and the Canary Islands (-1,900).

Over the past year, activity rates increased across all Autonomous Communities, with the most significant growth in Catalonia (adding 136,700 more active individuals), Andalusia (102,700), and Comunidad de Madrid (101,500). Activity rates this quarter ranged from 67.22% in Illes Balears to 51.68% in Principado de Asturias.
