Cruise passenger numbers in the Canary Islands surge by 87% compared to 2022

From January to September, the Canary Islands saw an impressive 86.9% increase in cruise passengers compared to 2022, with a total of 1.5 million travelers. During this period, 706 cruise ships visited the islands, slightly down by 7.7% from 2022.

Between January and September, the Canary Islands witnessed a remarkable 86.9% surge in cruise passengers compared to the same period in 2022, totaling 1.5 million passengers. These statistics, sourced from Puertos del Estado, also reveal that 706 cruise ships visited the Canary Islands during this timeframe, which is a slight decrease of 7.7% compared to 2022.


In September alone, Canary ports welcomed 69,565 cruise passengers, marking a substantial 55.1% increase compared to the previous year.

The cumulative passenger traffic for the Canary Islands’ ports, including both regular maritime lines and cruise ships, reached 7.1 million travelers (5.5 million via regular lines and an additional 1.5 million via cruises) from January to September. This represents a significant 17.5% growth compared to 2022.

For September specifically, the total passenger traffic (combining regular and cruise passengers) reached 704,372, indicating a 9.6% increase compared to the same month the previous year. Among these travelers, 634,807 utilized regular transport lines, while an additional 69,565 were cruise passengers.

According to Puertos del Estado’s port traffic summary, Spain received a total of 431 cruise ships in September (3,106 throughout the year). In terms of cumulative data, the ports that saw the most cruise ship visits were Barcelona (589), the Balearic Islands (571), Las Palmas (389), and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (317).

Of the 8.4 million passengers who arrived in Spanish ports in the first nine months of the year, the majority disembarked in Barcelona (2,524,856). This was followed by the ports of the Balearic Islands (1,971,572), Las Palmas (912,794), and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (662,260).
