The 2024 working calendar will feature a total of 12 public holidays, with 9 of them being celebrated nationwide in Spain, the same number as the previous year. Additionally, there will be two local public holidays, bringing the total to 14.
In 2024, the national public holidays celebrated throughout Spain will include New Year’s Day on Monday, 1 January, Epiphany of the Lord on Saturday, 6 January, Good Friday on Friday, 29 March, Labour Day on Wednesday, 1 May, Assumption of the Virgin on Thursday, 15 August, Spanish National Day on Saturday, 12 October, All Saints’ Day on Friday, 1 November, Day of the Spanish Constitution on Friday, 6 December, and Nativity of the Lord on Wednesday, 25 December.
Certain autonomous communities have the authority to move some common public holidays to other dates. For instance, Maundy Thursday on 28 March will be a public holiday throughout Spain except in Valencia and Catalonia, while Epiphany on 6 January will remain unchanged in all autonomous communities.
Autonomous communities also have the option to substitute national holidays that fall on a Sunday with their own traditional holidays, such as Saint Joseph’s Day (19 March) or Saint James’ Day (25 July).
Moreover, some long weekends will be observed due to public holidays falling on Mondays or Fridays. These include Monday, 1 January, Friday, 1 November, and Friday, 6 December.
In regions where Maundy Thursday (28 March) is celebrated, there will be a four-day long weekend, and in five communities (Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Navarre, Basque Country, and La Rioja), this long weekend will extend to five days because they also observe Easter Monday (1 April) as a public holiday.
Additionally, workers may choose to take a day off to extend the weekend for the Assumption of the Virgin (15 August) celebrated on Thursday.
Catalonia and Valencia have introduced a recoverable paid holiday, which means that workers who take this additional holiday will need to make up the hours not worked. In Valencia, the recoverable paid public holiday falls on Monday, 24 June (San Juan), while Catalonia can choose from 6 January, 1 April, 24 June, or 26 December (San Esteban).
