Calima persists in the Canary Islands: pre-alert continues amid potential deterioration of conditions

The weather forecast in the Canary Islands for Wednesday, 13 December, includes mixed conditions, with presence of some calima.

Today’s weather forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) suggests mixed conditions across the Canary Islands. In Gran Canaria, expect partly cloudy or clear skies with some calima, particularly intensifying in the afternoon. In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, skies will be mostly clear with some high clouds towards evening, alongside calima conditions that are expected to diminish later.

Temperature-wise, the highs are set to rise slightly, while the lows will stay largely constant, except for minor increases in inland areas. For instance, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will experience temperatures ranging from a high of 24°C to a low of 18°C.

Wind conditions across the islands will be predominantly light easterlies, becoming moderate at times on the northern and southern slopes. By the evening, these winds are expected to turn north-easterly and may pick up in strength.

PRE-ALERT SITUATION DUE TO CALIMA

Calima persists in the Canary Islands: pre-alert continues amid potential deterioration of conditions

Importantly, a pre-alert has been issued by the regional government due to calima in the Canary Islands, predominantly affecting the southern slopes and gradually spreading to other areas. This calima could lead to elevated concentrations of PM10 particles—small enough to enter the respiratory system—at levels of 100-150 micrograms per cubic meter, posing potential health risks, especially for individuals with chronic or respiratory illnesses. Visibility may also be reduced to between 4,000 and 5,000 meters.

For more detailed information and updates, it’s recommended to keep track of the latest forecasts and advisories from Aemet and the Canary Islands government.
