Calima in the Canary Islands to briefly ease, set to return this weekend

The weather prediction for Friday, December 15th, in the Canary Islands suggests a brief lull in calima conditions, although these are expected to return over the weekend.

Today’s weather forecast for the Canary Islands reveals variable conditions. In the northern and eastern regions, expect cloudy intervals that will diminish to partly cloudy skies by the morning, with high cloud intervals appearing towards the late afternoon.


In other areas, the skies will generally be clear or have little cloud cover, punctuated with occasional high clouds. This update comes from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

Temperature-wise, there will be no significant change, with the mercury expected to hover between a high of 23 degrees in Tenerife and La Gomera and a low of 16 degrees on El Hierro.

Winds will predominantly be moderate and easterly, with strong gusts possible on southeast and west slopes in the first half of the day. These winds are expected to weaken to light to moderate on the summits by the morning, shifting predominantly to the southeast by the day’s end.

In the north and east of Gran Canaria, the morning will see a decrease in cloud cover, leading to partly cloudy conditions, with a chance of high clouds forming later in the day. Elsewhere on Gran Canaria, conditions are expected to be partly cloudy or clear, with some high cloud intervals and a slight possibility of haze towards the evening.

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are forecasted to have slightly cloudy skies with some low cloud intervals in the north and east during the early morning. High clouds are expected particularly towards the end of the day, along with light haze from the afternoon.

Maximum temperatures will remain the same or rise slightly, especially in inland areas, while minimum temperatures are likely to remain constant or drop slightly on the southern slopes. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, temperatures are expected to range between 23ºC and 18ºC.

Regarding the wind, it will blow moderately from the northeast, with strong intervals on the northwest and southeast slopes in the early morning. This will ease to light to moderate easterly winds by morning, turning predominantly southeasterly in the higher areas during the latter half of the day.
