Interest in rural lodgings in the Canary Islands for New Year’s Eve celebrations rises by 68%

Reservations in the Canary Islands show an above-average occupancy rate for rural accommodations, with visitors seeking to end the year in a warmer, summer-like setting with pleasant temperatures.

Bookings for rural stays in the Canary Islands for New Year’s Eve have reached 68%, surpassing the national average of 67%. This reflects a 5% increase from last year’s same night, with regions like Murcia experiencing occupancy peaks of up to 90%, as per EscapadaRural’s data.


More than half of Spain’s autonomous communities have reported higher-than-average rural occupancy rates. Leading the list is Murcia, followed by Catalonia (82%), Andalusia (76%), Valencia (76%), Aragon (72%), Navarre (70%), Madrid (69%), Castilla La-Mancha (68%), and the Canary Islands (68%).

Province-wise, Murcia tops the chart at 89%, with Barcelona (85%), Girona (83%), Las Palmas (82%), and Huelva (82%) trailing closely. Over twenty-five provinces have shown occupancy rates above the national average.

Judith Monmany, EscapadaRural’s communication head, notes that celebrating New Year’s Eve in a rural house is popular among families and friend groups. She adds that unlike longer holiday periods where people travel further, the highest occupancy rates for New Year’s Eve are in provinces with populous capitals.

For Christmas Eve, rural house occupancy is also high, reaching 64% compared to the national average of 50%. Madrid (64%), Catalonia (60%), and Navarre (60%) are popular, with high occupancy in provinces like Barcelona (69%), Segovia (68%), Cordoba (66%), Las Palmas (65%), and Madrid (64%).

In the Canary Islands, the demand for New Year’s Eve stays is exceptionally high. Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria are leading destinations, with average return airfares of 226 and 263 euros respectively. For those seeking a warmer farewell to the year, return flights from Madrid to Santa Cruz de Tenerife are around 169 euros in economy class.
