The Mueca Festival in Puerto de la Cruz, the best cultural event in the Canary Islands in 2023

The Fundación Contemporánea releases its annual report, with the Museo del Prado leading at the national level, and Mueca receiving recognition as the best in the Canary Islands.

The Fundación Contemporánea has unveiled its Observatorio de la Cultura 2023 report, which lauds the Mueca festival in Puerto de la Cruz as the Canary Islands’ finest cultural event. Nationally, Spain‘s cultural highlights for 2023 include the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía, the Thyssen, the Guggenheim, and the San Sebastián Film Festival, rounding out the top 10 with the Teatro Real, Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM), Valencian Centro del Carmen de Cultura Contemporánea (CCCC), ARCO, and PHotoEspaña.

Within the Canary Islands, Mueca leads the way, followed by TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, Phe Festival, Canarias Jazz & Más, Festival de Música de Canarias, and Festival del Cuento de Los Silos. Newcomers to the ranking this year are Masdanza and Temudas Festival. Remarkably, TEA is the sole representative from the archipelago in the national rankings.

The report from the Observatory is built on the insights of 414 cultural professionals who, in December, participated in a survey evaluating the finest cultural offerings in Spain. The list comprises 108 institutions and activities, including the Galería de las Colecciones Reales (Madrid), the Sorolla Centenary, the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, and the Centro de Arte Hortensia Herrero (CAHH) in Valencia, as disclosed in the report released on Tuesday.

The Observatory’s assessment is grounded in the quality and innovation of cultural programming in different communities and cities. Unsurprisingly, Madrid, Catalonia, the Basque Country, the Valencian Community, and Andalusia once again occupy the top five positions.
