The forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) had already cautioned about the unusually hot conditions that the Canary Islands would experience on Wednesday. Contrary to typical winter temperatures, the forecast anticipated that the thermometers across the islands would register above 26 degrees Celsius on average.
Today, the archipelago leads the national temperature rankings, with nine out of the top ten highest temperatures recorded in the entire country. According to weather station data, the highest temperature was recorded in the municipality of Antigua, located in Fuerteventura, where it soared to 30.2 degrees Celsius.
The western islands bore the brunt of the heat on Wednesday. Tías in Lanzarote, La Aldea de San Nicolás in Gran Canaria, Lanzarote Airport, and Tasarte in Gran Canaria rounded out the top five highest temperatures in Spain, with readings of 29.7, 29.4, 28.6, and 27.9 degrees, respectively.
One of the most noteworthy figures came from La Graciosa, where at 12:20 a.m., the temperature soared to 27.3 degrees Celsius. Following closely behind was Tenerife Sur Airport, recording 27.1 degrees Celsius, the only weather station in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife to feature in this ranking.
Similar temperatures were also reported in Tinajo, Lanzarote, and Tuineje and La Oliva, both registering 26.8 degrees Celsius, making them the two municipalities in Fuerteventura that rounded off the list of the ten highest temperatures recorded across Spain.
These temperature readings are based on data collected and updated by Aemet weather stations up until 4:00 p.m.
