Weather alerts issued in Tenerife for the Carnival Piñata weekend

Tenerife will be exposed to risks starting from Friday night.

The street carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife kicked off last Friday, 9 February, amidst rainy conditions in the city. However, the festive spirit remained undampened as carnival-goers continued to celebrate. The weather has varied throughout the event, with calima (dust haze) dominating the recent festivities.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has now issued yellow warnings for the upcoming Piñata weekend. This Friday, Tenerife, La Palma, and Gran Canaria are on alert for winds reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h.

Starting from 21:00, intense gusts are anticipated, particularly impacting lower elevation and coastal regions on the southeast and southwest slopes of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, along with coastal areas in the west, mountain peaks, and El Paso on La Palma, where speeds could escalate to 80 km/h.
