Canary Islands subject to yellow and orange weather alerts

The weather conditions in the Canary Islands are expected to persist until at least Wednesday.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued yellow and orange alerts for wind and coastal conditions across the Canary Islands. The yellow alert will commence on the islands of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro starting from 21:00 hours and is expected to spread across the entire archipelago as the week progresses, with conditions expected to worsen.


On Monday the 26th, Tenerife will experience north-easterly swells at speeds of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7), particularly affecting the south-east. The island’s weather forecast for today includes mostly cloudy skies, a slight chance of isolated, light rain, and temperatures varying from 23 to 14 degrees Celsius.

Wind conditions will also be significant, with anticipated maximum gusts reaching 80 km/h on La Gomera and El Hierro, where intense trade winds will mainly impact the southeast and northwest slopes. In La Palma, the northwest slope, the extreme south, and the El Paso area will face gusts up to 70 km/h.

By Tuesday, the yellow alerts for wind and coastal events will expand to include the entire archipelago. La Palma’s alert will escalate to orange for wind from 06:00 hours on the 27th until 17:00 hours on Wednesday the 28th, expecting maximum gusts up to 90 km/h, particularly around El Paso.

In Tenerife, yellow alerts for wind and coastal phenomena are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday, with wind gusts up to 80 km/h and intense trade winds primarily affecting the southeast and northwest slopes, as well as the Teno massif. Maritime conditions will feature north-easterly winds of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7) in the southeast, shifting towards the extreme northwest later, with wave heights reaching up to four metres.

La Palma will see its mountain regions under an orange alert from 06:00 hours on Tuesday, with wind gusts peaking at 90 km/h, notably impacting El Paso. The rest of the island will remain under yellow alerts for wind and waves, with gusts up to 80 km/h and north-easterly swells of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7) affecting the west and southeast.

La Gomera and El Hierro will face yellow warnings for wind and waves, with gusts reaching 80 km/h and strong trade winds affecting the southeast and northwest slopes. Maritime conditions will include north-easterly winds of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7) impacting the southeast and west of both islands.

Gran Canaria will be under yellow alerts for wind and waves, with gusts impacting the southeast and northwest slopes and the island’s exposed peaks. At sea, conditions include north-easterly winds of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7) in the southeast and west.

Fuerteventura and Lanzarote will also be under yellow warnings for coastal phenomena, with winds reaching 50 to 61 km/h (force 7) and combined north seas escalating to heights of 4 to 5 metres, particularly impacting the southern half and high areas of Lanzarote.
