Yellow alert for heavy swell in the Canary Islands this Sunday

On Sunday, 10 March, the Canary Islands will receive a yellow alert for coastal phenomena, as announced by Aemet. The warning excludes La Gomera, and the south, east, and west areas of Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

This Sunday, 10 March, the Canary Islands will be issued a yellow warning for coastal phenomena by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). The alert specifically excludes La Gomera and the southern, eastern, and western regions of Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

The timing for the activation of the yellow warning will vary: at 04:00 hours for Lanzarote and La Palma; 09:00 hours for Fuerteventura; 12:00 hours for El Hierro and the northern parts of Tenerife; and 15:00 hours for the northern parts of Gran Canaria.

Across Spain, 14 autonomous communities and Ceuta will face yellow weather warnings for conditions including rain, snow, wind, and coastal events this Sunday. Aemet anticipates locally intense and/or prolonged rain in areas such as Galicia, the Pyrenees, the western Central system, eastern Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and parts of Andalusia.

In contrast, less frequent and lighter rainfall is expected in the Cantabrian Sea, Ebro, and Levantine regions, with these areas likely clearing up towards the end of the day. Snow is predicted in mountainous areas of the northern half and southeast, with possible accumulations of 10-20 cm, and could also fall in lower areas of Galicia and the northern plains.

Yellow alert for heavy swell in the Canary Islands this Sunday

A broad, intense low-pressure system affecting the mainland and the Balearic Islands will maintain overcast conditions and bring widespread rainfall. The northern Canary Islands can expect cloudy skies with potential light rain, while the southern parts may experience intermittent clouds with possible isolated showers.

Significant snowfall is expected in the northern and southeastern peninsular mountains, and possibly in lower areas of Galicia and the northern plains, with snow levels ranging from 800/1,200 meters in the north and centre to 600/1,000 m in the northwest. Strong winds are forecast for the Mediterranean coast, Atlantic Andalusia, and Galicia, with extremely strong gusts in the mountainous regions of the northern half and southeast.

Temperature-wise, the Canary Islands and Melilla will see a rise in maximum temperatures, with little change in the Balearic Islands and a decrease elsewhere. Minimum temperatures are expected to drop in the northern third of the mainland, rise in the southern and southeastern thirds, Melilla, Ebro, and the Canary Islands, and remain stable elsewhere. Light frosts are forecast in the northern and southeastern mainland mountain regions, becoming more severe in the Pyrenees.

Wind conditions will intensify from the south and west across the mainland and the Balearic Islands, with strong and very strong gusts anticipated along the Mediterranean coast, Atlantic Andalusia, and Galicia, particularly affecting mountainous regions in the north and southeast.
