Government issues recommendations in response to latest haze episode in the Canary Islands

The regional government provides guidance as haze started impacting the islands on Sunday and will continue so throughout this week.

The regional government, via the Directorate General for Emergencies, has initiated a pre-alert for haze across the Canary Islands. This action follows the State Meteorological Agency’s (AEMET) forecast, predicting a new wave of suspended dust that were to affect the islands this week. The haze is expected to predominantly affect Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, as well as the midlands, summits, and southern areas of the other islands.

This precautionary step aligns with the data provided by AEMET and other sources, and adheres to the Canary Islands’ Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).

Given the potential health risks posed by the haze, especially to individuals with chronic or respiratory conditions, the Canary Islands Government advises the public to undertake appropriate self-protective actions. These include maintaining a supply of necessary medications, keeping doors and windows closed to avoid outdoor exposure, and refraining from unnecessary outdoor activities.

As a universal precaution, it is advised to stay hydrated, avoid arid surroundings, and abstain from intense physical activities during this period.

For those needing to travel by vehicle, it is recommended to reduce speed to mitigate the risk of accidents due to potentially decreased visibility.
