The regional government has issued a pre-alert for the Canary Islands due to expected adverse coastal conditions affecting primarily the northern regions of all islands and the western areas of La Palma, El Hierro, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. This warning comes with strong advice to adhere to safety precautions to prevent accidents.
Starting from 00:30 hours on Tuesday, 26 March, this pre-alert status, influenced by predictions from the State Meteorological Agency and other sources, activates the Specific Emergency Plan for the Canary Islands (PEFMA) in response to the threat of adverse weather events.
The forecast anticipates challenging sea conditions across these areas, particularly noting the likelihood of combined sea swells ranging from 2.5 to four metres. Additionally, strong winds ranging from force six to seven (39 to 61 km/h), and occasionally hitting force eight (62 to 74 km/h), are expected, impacting the seas between the eastern and southeastern slopes of La Gomera and the western regions of Tenerife.
Given these conditions, the Canary Islands Government urges residents and visitors to steer clear of potentially dangerous areas along the coast and to follow established self-protection measures meticulously. In the coming days, with continued rough seas, the public is advised to avoid standing on piers, breakwaters, or close to the seafront to prevent being hit or swept away by waves.
Furthermore, the government reminds everyone that swimming is strictly forbidden at beaches displaying a red flag and to generally avoid entering the sea in areas with strong waves, undercurrents, or where lifeguard services are unavailable.
The government suggests postponing any water-based or outdoor activities and securing boats in protected areas. Coastal walks and driving on roads near the seafront should also be avoided. Should there be any observation of unusual wave activity, it is crucial to keep a safe distance from the water, even if the sea appears calm, and to dial 1 1 2 immediately in the event of an emergency.
