The Canary Islands Government’s Directorate General for Emergencies has issued a pre-alert for wind conditions affecting Tenerife, La Palma, and El Hierro starting from 15:00 on Maundy Thursday.
Moderate west and northwest winds are anticipated, with strong wind zones, particularly around El Teide. Wind gusts in the elevated and north-eastern midlands of El Hierro, the eastern summits and midlands of La Palma, and Tenerife’s central summit and Dorsal Mountain Range are expected to hit speeds between 60-80 kilometres per hour.

This wind alert complements another alert issued by the regional government for coastal events across the entire archipelago, also set for tomorrow, 28 March, starting from 22:00 hours. Sea conditions could see waves reaching up to six metres, predominantly in the northern and western areas of La Palma, El Hierro, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and the northern regions of Tenerife, La Gomera, and Gran Canaria.
In response to these forecasts, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has placed yellow warnings on three islands for the upcoming conditions:
- Tenerife: A yellow warning for coastal phenomena has been issued for the metropolitan and northern areas, with west or southwest winds expected to reach speeds of 50 to 61 kilometres per hour (force 7) along the north coast.
- La Palma: Yellow warnings cover coastal phenomena (east and west coasts), wind (summits and east), and rain (summits, east and west). Predictions include a north-westerly sea swell of 4 to 5 metres, maximum wind gusts up to 70 kilometres per hour (potentially reaching 80km/h on the summits), and rainfall accumulation of 15 mm within an hour, particularly in the island’s northern half.
- El Hierro: Yellow warnings for coastal phenomena and wind are in place across the island. Expected conditions include a northwesterly sea swell of 4 to 5 metres and maximum wind gusts of 70 km/h, mainly impacting the midlands of the northeastern tip of the island.
