The Villa de Tegueste Town Council, via its Department of Festivities, has unveiled the poster for the 56th Romería in honour of San Marcos Evangelista, scheduled for 28 April. The celebration stretches from 6 April to 9 May, featuring a diverse programme of events.
During the unveiling, Mayoress Ana Rosa Mena highlighted that the climax of these festivities, the pilgrimage, marks the beginning of traditional celebrations across the Canary Islands. She emphasized, “Our San Marcos fiestas are crucial not just for local residents but also attract thousands of visitors who come to explore our traditions.”
Eladia López, the Councillor for Festivities, further detailed that the events in the programme reflect Tegueste’s cultural identity, from the blessing of the livestock to the oxen driving competitions and various activities designed for all ages, running until early May.
Jorge González, the designer of this year’s poster, was present to discuss his artistic approach. He explained, “The poster features San Marcos, the town’s patron saint, and incorporates elements symbolic of the festivities, including seeds resembling those on wagon panels, wine stains, ornamental flowers, and the stripes of a Tegueste maga’s skirt, among other motifs.”
The festivities’ programme also includes the traditional reading of the proclamation on 18 April, the Gala de Romera Mayor y de la Tercera Edad, an offering to San Marcos, a Folk Festival, the Baile de Magos de Tegueste, and various sporting events, among other activities.
