Canary Islands airports witness robust passenger growth in early 2024

The Canary Islands have seen a notable increase in airport traffic, with over 21.79 million passengers recorded from January to May 2024, marking a 9.9% rise from the previous year, according to a recent report from Aena.

Airports across the Canary Islands have seen a substantial 9.9% increase in passenger numbers, reaching over 21.79 million from January through May this year, as stated in the latest Aena report. Specifically, out of these, 21,635,981 passengers were on commercial flights, with domestic flights carrying 8,315,913 passengers, an increase of 8.8%, and international flights transporting 13,320,068 passengers, up by 11.3%.

In the month of May alone, the total passenger count reached 3,934,369, which is an 8.6% increase compared to May of the previous year. Of these, 3,918,675 were commercial passengers, with 1,823,931 travelling domestically—up by 9.9%, and 2,094,744 flying internationally—up by 8%. Additionally, the month recorded 36,808 aircraft movements, an increase of 8.9%, and the transportation of 2,737 tonnes of goods, rising by 12.1%.

For May, Gran Canaria Airport led with 1,094,567 passengers, a 9.6% increase from last year. This was followed by Tenerife South Airport, which saw 976,706 passengers (up by 12.4%), César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport with 663,867 passengers (a 2.9% increase), Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna with 574,798 (up 10.6%), Fuerteventura with 471,459 (up 4.6%), La Palma with 117,514 (a 9.7% increase), El Hierro with 25,418 (up 5.1%), and La Gomera with 10,040 passengers (a 7.4% increase).
