The Canary Islands have welcomed 6,493,340 tourists up to May, marking a 10.68% increase compared to the same period last year, with accumulated expenditures reaching 9,639 million euros, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE) on Wednesday.


In May alone, the Canary Islands received 1,037,701 tourists, a 7.06% increase from the previous month, with tourist spending amounting to 1,456 million euros, 14.7% more than in April. Each tourist spent an average of 1,403 euros in May, a 7.1% increase, with daily expenditures standing at 189 euros (+12.4%). The average length of stay was 7.4 days, a slight decrease from previous figures.

Spain overall is experiencing a record tourist season, with over 33 million international tourists visiting up to May, a 13.6% increase from the same period in 2023. Tourist expenditures in Spain reached over 43,200 million euros, a 21.8% increase from the first five months of 2023.

The United Kingdom remains the largest source market, contributing over 6.3 million tourists from January to May, a 10.6% increase. France follows closely with 4.42 million tourists (+13.2%) and Germany with 4.41 million tourists (+14.7%). Notable growth was also seen from Belgium (+20.3%) and Ireland (+19%).

In May, Spain welcomed 9.3 million international tourists, an 11.5% increase from May 2023, with expenditures totaling 11,687 million euros, a 19.7% year-on-year increase. The average spending per visitor in May was 1,263 euros (+7.3%), with daily spending reaching 204 euros (+8.6%). The average length of stay was 6 days.

Minister of Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu, highlighted the attractiveness of Spain as a destination for international tourists, noting the significant increase in average spending per visitor, which exceeds inflation rates and contributes to the modernization, sustainability, and quality of employment in the tourism sector. Hereu emphasized the government’s commitment to sustainability, decentralization, and deseasonalization to maintain Spain’s top position among international tourist destinations.
