Canary Islands weather update: Multiple warnings for wind, coastal phenomena, and high temperatures

This week, the Canary Islands face a series of yellow weather warnings from Aemet for strong winds, coastal phenomena, and extreme temperatures, affecting multiple islands.

This week, the Canary Islands are grappling with a complex mix of weather conditions, prompting the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) to issue multiple yellow warnings for several islands.

Yesterday, Aemet initially set yellow warnings for adverse weather conditions expected on Wednesday, 10 July. However, following a reassessment of the weather data this Tuesday, the agency has not only increased the number of warnings but also extended their duration to include Thursday, 11 July.

The warnings encompass a variety of meteorological phenomena including strong winds, coastal disruptions, and unusually high temperatures. Notably, Fuerteventura remains the only island in the archipelago that will not be affected by these conditions.

Starting at noon on Wednesday, 10 July, and continuing throughout Thursday, 11 July, islands including Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote will be under a yellow wind warning. The eastern, southern, and western parts of the capital islands, along with the western regions and the summits of the beautiful island, are expected to experience maximum gusts of up to 80 kilometres per hour. The trade winds will particularly impact the southeast and northwest slopes, as well as the area around El Paso on La Palma.

Coastal Phenomena

Alongside the wind warnings, yellow alerts for coastal phenomena will be in place for Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro, and Gran Canaria on both Wednesday and Thursday. These alerts will activate in the afternoon on Wednesday, starting at 15:00 in the east, south, and west of the capital islands and at 18:00 on La Gomera and El Hierro. A north-easterly wind reaching speeds of 50 to 61 kilometres per hour (force 7) is forecast, mainly affecting offshore areas in the Anaga-Agaete channel and between the islands. This warning will extend to La Palma on Thursday, with similar wind conditions expected offshore along the northwest and southeast coasts.

Extreme Temperatures

Regarding temperature, both Tenerife and Gran Canaria are expected to face intense heat on Thursday, with yellow warnings for high temperatures starting from 10:00 am. Thermometers on these islands might soar to 35 degrees Celsius, and there’s a possibility that temperatures could peak at 37 degrees in the southern midlands of Gran Canaria.

These weather warnings suggest a significant impact on daily activities and safety, and residents and visitors in the affected areas are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
