The tramway extension to Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna Airport will precede the development of the northern train route, according to Rosa Dávila, president of the Island Council of Tenerife. During a recent discussion on Cadena Ser Radio, Dávila outlined the transportation plans which include extending the tram to the airport first and subsequently to the municipality of Tacoronte.
This decision prioritizes enhancing connectivity in the northern part of the island, contrasting with the southern region where the train project is further along and mainly needs plan updates and funding.

In the southern part of Tenerife, the focus is on constructing the San Isidro-Adeje section to improve access to the airport and manage the high volume of vehicle and tourist traffic. This effort is part of a broader initiative aimed at ultimately linking with Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Dávila emphasized that the project is well-defined, with completed impact assessments, and efforts are underway to integrate it into the national rail network to secure funding—an act she deems just.

Furthermore, Dávila is advocating for the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands to be recognized as part of the national rail network, which would facilitate equal access to potential EU funds.
According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport of the Government of the Canary Islands, the train project might go to tender by the end of the 2027 legislative term if it successfully joins the state network and secures EU financing.
