Canary Islands on high alert for rising temperatures this weekend

The Aemet has issued a high temperature alert for the Canary Islands this Saturday, with diverse weather conditions expected across the region.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued an alert for high temperatures across the Canary Islands this Saturday, 13 July. Today’s weather is forecast to be cloudy in the extreme northeast and intermittently cloudy along the rest of the north coast, with broad clearings during midday and mostly clear skies elsewhere, accompanied by light haze at higher altitudes.

Temperatures will generally remain steady, with a peak of 29 degrees Celsius in Tenerife and a low of 19 degrees on El Hierro. The wind is expected to blow from the northeast, ranging from moderate to strong intensity, with very strong gusts up to 80 km/h on the southeast and extreme western slopes during the early hours, which will subside by morning.

In Gran Canaria, the northern lowlands will see cloudy intervals, clearing up significantly during the central hours, while the rest of the island will experience partly cloudy to clear skies and light haze at higher elevations.

Similarly, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will enjoy generally clear skies with some cloudiness and light haze at higher altitudes, as per Aemet’s reports.

Temperature changes will be minimal except for a slight drop in the south; however, the interior southern slopes will still see temperatures generally exceeding 32°C, potentially reaching or surpassing 35°C, with peaks up to 37°C at times. Night temperatures in these areas could hit 25°C. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, temperatures are expected to vary between a maximum of 25°C and a minimum of 21°C.
