Agrocanarias 2024: Celebrating gofio in the Canary Islands

Agrocanarias 2024 spotlights the rich diversity of gofio, celebrating the culinary heritage of the Canary Islands.

The Government of the Canary Islands’ Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty, in conjunction with the Canarian Institute of Agri-Food Quality (ICCA) and the Island Council of La Gomera, has officially announced the Official Gofio Competition Agrocanarias 2024.

The announcement, published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC), calls for entries from local mills that produce gofio using wheat, millet, barley, rye, oats, rice, broad beans, chickpeas, soya beans, or any combination of these grains and legumes.

The competition is open to all gofio producers in the Canary Islands who hold the necessary health authorizations and whose products are available in commercial channels under their own brand names. This event aims to highlight and reward the finest gofio productions across the archipelago.

Participants can enter their gofio in one of four categories, based on the primary cereal or legume used in the gofio: wheat, millet, a blend of both, or other cereals and/or leguminous plants. The entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges using a blind tasting method, where the samples are presented without identifying labels to ensure impartiality and accurate assessment of quality.

The evaluations will take place over two sessions: a preliminary round on September 18 and a final round on September 19, both scheduled to be held in La Gomera. The top-scoring gofios from these sessions will vie for several prestigious awards, including the title of “Best Gofio of the Canary Islands.” This competition not only celebrates the rich culinary heritage of the Canary Islands but also promotes excellence and innovation among its local gofio producers.
