UNESCO confirms extension of La Palma’s biosphere reserve status through 2034

UNESCO extends La Palma's designation as a World Biosphere Reserve until 2034, applauding its exemplary management and conservation efforts.

During its 36th session in Agadir, Morocco, the International Coordinating Council of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme officially approved the renewal of La Palma‘s designation as a World Biosphere Reserve for an additional decade. This decision comes as a result of the island’s thorough compliance with global conservation standards and its proactive engagement in sustainable practices.

Sergio Rodríguez, president of the World Biosphere Reserve and of the Cabildo of La Palma, expressed gratitude for the continued recognition from UNESCO. He acknowledged the efforts of the reserve’s executive management, technical team, and advisory councils, as well as the supportive institutions and the citizens of La Palma, whose collective work has positioned the reserve as a model of excellence on the international stage.

The renewal is based on the “excellent quality” of the periodic review dossier submitted by La Palma, which not only met but exceeded the expectations set by UNESCO’s advisory bodies. The report highlighted La Palma’s adherence to the recommendations from the previous review and its active participation in the thematic network of coastal and island biosphere reserves.

Significantly, the approval of La Palma’s Management Plan for 2023-2032 was also praised, along with its initiatives to share experiences with other biosphere reserves across Spain and Latin America. The island has also been noted for its innovative approach to integrating the Biosphere Reserve brand into local sustainable development efforts and cultural events, further involving the community and enhancing the local economy.
