The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) is issuing yellow warnings across the Canary Islands as temperatures are expected to soar this Saturday, reaching as high as 36ºC in certain areas.
Soaring Temperatures Across the Archipelago
This Saturday, the Canary Islands are bracing for a significant heatwave, with Aemet predicting extreme heat particularly in the midlands and peaks of the south of Gran Canaria where temperatures might peak at 36ºC. Similarly, the interiors of the easternmost islands and the western and southern peaks of other islands in the archipelago are expected to see temperatures up to 34ºC.
Widespread Yellow Warnings
Aemet continues to maintain yellow warnings for high temperatures across all islands today, extending these cautions to include coastal phenomena on Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro, and Gran Canaria. In addition to the heat, areas in the southeast and west of Gran Canaria and parts of La Gomera might experience very strong wind gusts.
Atmospheric Conditions
The region will mostly experience partly cloudy to clear skies with occasional high cloud intervals. As the day progresses, expect cloudy intervals in the lower northern areas of the mountainous islands. Calima, a dust-laden wind from the Sahara, is also forecasted to affect parts of the archipelago, predominantly impacting the province of Las Palmas.
Temperature Fluctuations
Minimum temperatures are anticipated to remain stable or increase slightly compared to Friday, potentially reaching up to 25ºC in the southern interiors of the mountainous islands, with localized areas in Gran Canaria possibly experiencing temperatures between 28-30ºC.
Maximum temperatures are also not expected to see significant changes, with the southern slopes potentially recording up to 36ºC in the midlands and summits of the south of Gran Canaria, and around 34ºC in the rest of the archipelago.
Nighttime Heat Record
Interestingly, the Canary Islands have recorded exceptionally high temperatures even at night, with some areas reaching 30ºC. Notably, San Bartolomé de Tirajana in Gran Canaria experienced a temperature of 32.7ºC at 01:20 hours, marking it one of the hottest spots in Spain during this period.
This ongoing heatwave continues to challenge the residents and visitors of the Canary Islands, prompting widespread precautions and continuous monitoring by the Aemet to ensure public safety amid these extreme weather conditions.
