The Island Council of Tenerife issues urgent heat safety guidelines amid rising temperatures

In response to the ongoing heatwave, the Island Council of Tenerife has issued crucial safety recommendations to help residents cope with the expected high temperatures.

As the heat intensifies on Tenerife, the Island Council has issued an urgent recommendation to all residents due to an official yellow warning from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) regarding the rising temperatures, which are expected to soar above 34 degrees Celsius in the coming days, particularly in the island’s interior and southern regions.

Health and Safety Measures Urged by the Island Council of Tenerife

Rosa Dávila, the President of the Island Council of Tenerife, stressed the critical need for public awareness about the risks of the scorching heat. “Residents must understand the potential dangers of these high temperatures and take responsible actions to mitigate health risks and prevent wildfires,” Dávila noted. She also encouraged everyone to promptly report any incidents of smoke or fire hazards to the emergency services by dialing 112.

In response to the yellow alert, the Island Council advises locals to adhere closely to health authority guidelines, which include:

  • Hydration: Regularly drink water throughout the day, even if not feeling thirsty, to prevent dehydration.
  • Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen, wear sunglasses, and dress in light, breathable, and light-colored clothing.
  • Shade and Rest: Seek shade during the day and limit physical activities, especially during peak heat hours from noon to 4 PM.
  • Special Care: Pay extra attention to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with chronic health conditions who are more affected by heat.

The government’s grade 1 fire risk measures are also in effect, highlighting strict prohibitions to safeguard against wildfires:

  • No Open Flames: The use of barbecues, bonfires, or any fire-based cooking or heating devices in recreational and wilderness areas is strictly forbidden.
  • Equipment Use: Tools or machinery capable of generating sparks, such as brush cutters, welding equipment, or grinders, are prohibited in high-risk areas.
  • Smoking Ban: Smoking is not permitted in recreational areas, campgrounds, or any forest trails and public mountain infrastructures.
  • Dispose Properly: Residents are reminded to never discard cigarette butts or matches carelessly and to avoid using any pyrotechnics in or near forested areas.

For homes adjacent to wooded areas, the Island Council of Tenerife recommends:

  • Clear Vegetation: Maintain clear surroundings by removing any branches touching buildings and clearing away dry vegetation.
  • Firefighting Readiness: Ensure that basic firefighting tools like hoses and axes are accessible, along with a reliable water source.

The Island Council’s directives aim to protect the community and natural landscapes of Tenerife from the severe impacts of high temperatures and potential fire hazards, urging everyone to follow these guidelines diligently.
