Canary Islands under yellow alert as sweltering heat returns

Sweltering heat returns to the Canary Islands, prompting Aemet to issue a yellow warning due to high temperatures and calima.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a warning again as sweltering heat is set to affect the Canary Islands starting this Tuesday. In light of the forecasted high temperatures, the agency has activated a yellow warning starting today on Gran Canaria.

According to Aemet, temperatures in the southern and western midlands of the island, as well as in the Tejeda basin, could reach 36 degrees Celsius from 11:00 AM onwards. In the western province, both maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to rise, ranging between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius.

Maximum temperatures will see a moderate increase in the inland areas of Tenerife, reaching up to 32 degrees in the south of the island. The rise in minimum temperatures will be particularly noticeable in the midlands and higher areas of Tenerife.

This Tuesday, the skies are expected to be generally clear with cloudy intervals in the morning along the north coast of the islands. However, the main feature of the day will undoubtedly be the high-altitude calima, which will predominate in the east during the afternoon and will spread to the west of the archipelago.

The wind is set to blow from the northeast moderately with intervals of strength on the southeast and northwest slopes. At sea, there will be northeast winds blowing at force 4 to 6, locally 3 or 4 on the northeast coast and occasionally 7 offshore in the southeast. There will be a swell or heavy swell with a northeast swell of 1 to 2 meters.

Canary Islands under yellow alert as sweltering heat returns

The heat in the Canary Islands will intensify throughout the week. Maximum temperatures will continue to rise during the week, and on Wednesday and Thursday, temperatures could exceed 37 degrees Celsius in some parts of the archipelago. Consequently, Aemet has extended the yellow warning to all the islands, except Lanzarote and La Graciosa, for both days.

Maximum temperatures of 34 degrees are anticipated in the east, south, and west of Tenerife, the summit of La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and Fuerteventura. The intense heat will mainly affect the south-facing midlands, except in La Palma.

For Gran Canaria, the warning will be upgraded to orange on Wednesday and Thursday, mainly affecting the south-facing midlands and the Tejeda basin, where it is expected to reach 37 degrees.
