Canary Islands on alert: Aemet predicts return of extreme heat

Extreme heat is forecast to return to the Canary Islands this Thursday, with temperatures expected to soar above 32 degrees Celsius in some parts.

The Canary Islands brace for a resurgence of extreme heat according to the latest report from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), predicting challenging weather conditions for Thursday, 1 August.

Today’s weather across the Canary Islands will display cloudy intervals predominantly in the northern lowlands, with skies generally becoming clearer towards the central hours. However, early and late hours are expected to remain mostly cloudy. The rest of the archipelago will enjoy partly cloudy to clear skies.

Significant temperature increases are expected in the interior regions of Tenerife, with mercury possibly climbing above 32 degrees Celsius on the southern, western, and eastern slopes. Other parts of the island may see steady or slightly rising temperatures. Gran Canaria’s northern lowlands will witness similar cloudy conditions, with potential clearing during midday, while other areas will remain mostly clear. High-altitude haze is anticipated later in the day.

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will mostly experience clear skies, though some cloudiness might occur early in the morning and towards the evening. Like their neighboring islands, light haze at high altitudes is expected as the day progresses.

Temperatures in the midlands and higher areas of the south and west could reach up to 34ºC, while in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the temperature will oscillate between a maximum of 26ºC and a minimum of 22ºC.

Wind patterns across the islands will generally be moderate from the northeast, intensifying significantly in the extreme northwest and southeast sectors. There’s also a chance of very strong gusts late in the day and potentially in the early morning. Breezes will prevail along the southwest coasts, providing some respite from the escalating temperatures.
