The Ministry of Health highlights that temperatures above 30ºC can significantly impact vulnerable individuals, particularly those with chronic conditions. Dr. José Alejandro Medina from the Internal Medicine Service at Hospital Quirónsalud Tenerife warns that heat exacerbates cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and dementia due to its effect on blood circulation.
Heat directs blood to the body’s periphery to dissipate heat, causing vasodilation and increased sweat production, leading to a drop in body temperature. Neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and dementia are also impacted as patients often have limited fluid intake, increasing the risk of dehydration. This can result in falls, fractures, renal function deterioration, and disorientation.
Ministry of Health Recommendations
The Ministry of Health states that temperatures above 30ºC can trigger adverse health effects in fragile individuals. It is recommended to maintain adequate hydration, with an intake of 30 ml/kg body weight of water per day.
Dr. Medina’s Advice
Dr. Medina suggests closely monitoring blood pressure, being more lenient with slightly higher blood pressure during heat waves, and potentially reducing medication. He advises avoiding sun exposure during peak hours and seeking shady, cool places. Observing where pets, particularly dogs, seek refuge from the heat can be a useful indicator of suitable locations to stay cool.
