The Directorate General of Emergencies, following forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and other reliable sources, has activated a pre-alert status for high temperatures in the Canary Islands. This decision is in line with the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for Adverse Weather Events (PEFMA), as outlined in Decree 18/2014 of 20 March. The pre-alert will take effect from 07:00 hours on Saturday, 10 August, and will cover Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro, La Palma, and Gran Canaria.
Affected Areas in the Canary Islands:
- Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro: The pre-alert is in place for areas above 800 metres in altitude.
- La Palma: The alert applies to regions above 1,000 metres, except in the north and northeast, where it rises to 1,400 metres.
- Gran Canaria: The northern half of the island is affected from 800 metres in altitude, while in the southern half, the alert starts from 400 metres.
Weather Forecast:
An episode of high temperatures is expected to impact the midlands and higher altitudes of these islands. In the western islands, maximum temperatures are forecasted to reach and exceed 30 – 32ºC, while in Gran Canaria’s southern midlands, summit, and high areas, temperatures could climb to between 34 – 36ºC.
