Disruptive passenger causes emergency landing and jail sentence after chaos on Tenerife flight

A passenger's disruptive behavior led to an emergency landing and an eight-month prison sentence.

A passenger’s disruptive behavior on a flight to Tenerife resulted in an unexpected detour and ultimately led to his imprisonment. The incident involved 34-year-old Brian Watt from Scotland, whose actions on an EasyJet flight from Glasgow turned a routine journey into a chaotic ordeal.

Watt flagrantly violated several in-flight rules by smoking in the plane’s lavatory, urinating in the aisle in full view of other passengers, and vandalizing a soap dispenser. His behavior escalated as he refused to remain seated and directed a barrage of insults and threats at the flight crew.

The situation deteriorated to the point where the pilot made the decision to divert the plane to Bristol Airport for an emergency landing. Upon arrival, Watt was met by police officers and taken into custody. The diversion caused further disruption, delaying the return flight to Glasgow due to the crew exceeding their allowed flight hours.

In addition to Watt, another passenger was arrested on suspicion of being drunk but was later released without charge. Watt, however, faced serious consequences. He was brought before North Somerset Magistrates’ Court, where he pled guilty to charges including being drunk on an aircraft, causing damage, disobeying the pilot’s orders, and using abusive language towards the crew.

Sergeant Rachael Hodges condemned Watt’s behavior, describing it as “disgraceful” and emphasized the significant disruption caused to all onboard. She expressed hope that his eight-month prison sentence would serve as a deterrent to others, underscoring the importance of maintaining order and civility during flights.
