Tenerife is actively promoting itself in China to attract new investments, coinciding with the 9th Spain-China Forum, organised by the Association for the Friendship of the Chinese People Abroad and the Spain-China Council Foundation. The event includes high-level political leaders from both countries and serves as a platform to enhance bilateral relations.
The Vice President and Minister of Tourism of Tenerife, Lope Afonso, highlighted that “China offers significant opportunities for investment, trade, and cultural cooperation. Tenerife is not only known for its exceptional natural beauty but also serves as a strategic hub connecting Europe, Africa, and Latin America—a true bridge between continents.”
Afonso emphasized that Tenerife has established a solid footing in key sectors such as tourism, technology, renewable energy, and agriculture, all areas where the island seeks to expand its relations with China. He added that Tenerife boasts modern infrastructure, special economic zones, and a business-friendly environment that encourages investment and trade.
Pedro González, the Director of External Action and Institutional Relations for the Cabildo of Tenerife, participated as a speaker at the forum. In his presentation at the prestigious Golden Hall of the Beijing Hotel, González outlined Tenerife’s tourist attractions, its economic and tax benefits for attracting investments, and the possibilities for local cooperation with China.
The Spain-China Forum serves as the primary public diplomacy event between the two nations, bringing together political, academic, business, and social leaders to discuss bilateral and global issues. “For the first time, Tenerife was able to have a voice on this significant platform for relations and exchange of ideas between Spain and one of the world’s leading economies,” said González.
During his speech, González also highlighted the strategic plans Tenerife has developed over the past year regarding international cooperation for development. These initiatives involve collaboration with local institutions and universities in Latin America and West Africa, aiming to strengthen ties between regions through local partnerships.
The forum underscored the importance of enhancing international relations through local cooperation, with Tenerife’s Cabildo playing a vital role in fostering these connections within the region.
