Final phase of the largest sports complex in the Canary Islands, Santa Cruz

The largest sports complex in the Canary Islands, located in Santa Cruz, will be completed by early 2025, featuring a new sports pavilion, swimming pool, and upgraded facilities for public use.

The construction of one of the largest sports complexes in the Canary Islands, located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is nearing completion. The mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, has confirmed that the new Paco Álvarez (Go Fit) sports pavilion and the David González municipal swimming pool are on track to be finished by January or February 2025. Bermúdez remarked, “The project is progressing very well, and we expect the facilities to be ready early next year.”

Bermúdez emphasised the significance of these new sports facilities for the city of Santa Cruz, highlighting the improvement in the quality of the city’s infrastructure. “The new Paco Álvarez pavilion and David González swimming pool will represent a major upgrade for our sporting venues, and we’re eagerly looking forward to the grand opening,” he stated.

The mayor also noted that the project was made possible thanks to the involvement of an external company, Go Fit, which was awarded the tender for the development. He confirmed that the sports pavilion would retain the name of Paco Álvarez, but its capacity would be vastly increased, allowing over 10,000 people to use the facility, compared to the previous limit of just 1,000.

In terms of the management of the sports complex, Bermúdez clarified that while private investment played a crucial role in the project, the facility will be managed by the city’s Department of Sports, led by Alicia Cebrián. This partnership will ensure that the pricing for the sports centre remains accessible to the public.

The new complex, located in the Tomé Cano area of the city, will also include substantial upgrades to the surrounding infrastructure. A new parking facility, offering 290 spaces, will be built over two levels beneath the complex, providing ample parking for users.

The David González swimming pool will feature three separate pools: a 25-metre training pool, a splash pool, and a pool equipped with water jets for relaxation. In addition to the pools, the complex will have a 1,700 m² weights room, multi-purpose areas, a games room for children, and a cafeteria. The swimming pool area will be managed directly by the Santa Cruz City Council, ensuring a clear separation from the concession-managed parts of the complex.

The main entrance to the complex will be via Calle Eduardo Zamacois, and the grandstand, located on the upper floor, will provide seating for 278 spectators, including 6 spots designed for those with disabilities. The area will also have accessible toilets and a lift. Additionally, a retractable grandstand will offer an extra 200 seats when needed.

The multi-purpose sports court within the pavilion will feature wooden flooring and will be illuminated with natural light thanks to large windows. It will include two changing rooms for athletes or general users, two changing rooms for referees or instructors, and a storage room. The pavilion will also house four squash courts, positioned between the main sports hall and the tennis courts, accessible via the ramp leading to the parking garage.

A multi-sports court, known as PP4, will cover an area of 1,408 m² (44m x 32m), with markings for futsal and handball as well as two basketball and volleyball courts. The pavilion will be connected to the sports centre via a staircase, enabling joint use of both areas.

In the racket sports zone, there will be two glass paddle tennis courts and two regulation tennis courts. The complex will also provide free public spaces, adjacent to the Heliodoro Rodríguez Stadium, further enhancing the urban environment around the facility.

Outdoor areas will feature a public square, along with a central area dedicated to children’s play equipment, creating a lively, open space that serves as both a recreational hub and a meeting place for local residents.
