Aemet forecasts rising temperatures and a pre-alert for coastal swell in the Canary Islands, urging caution near affected shores.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has forecast a rise in temperatures across the Canary Islands for today, Thursday, 10 October 2024. Most of the islands will experience mostly clear skies, with some cloudy intervals on coastal areas during the early morning and in the eastern, southern, and western regions of the western islands during midday. Winds are expected to be light, primarily as breezes across the islands.

Additionally, the Directorate General for Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government has issued a pre-alert for coastal swell due to the effects of the Kirk squall in the Atlantic. Starting at 18:00 on Wednesday, this swell could impact La Palma, El Hierro, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and Tenerife.

  • Nautical Activities: It is advised to postpone any planned boating activities until the seas calm.
  • Swimming Precautions: Avoid bathing in unsupervised beach areas, especially those displaying red flags.
  • Stay Clear of Breakwaters and Piers: To minimize the risk of incidents, avoid standing on breakwaters or piers, where waves can be unpredictable.
  • General Vigilance: Even if the swell seems to decrease, remain cautious, as conditions may worsen unexpectedly.

The government also emphasizes the importance of following rescue service instructions and calling 112 in the event of an emergency. These precautions are crucial for ensuring the safety of all those along the coast during this period of potentially dangerous weather conditions.
