Heavy rain and strong winds: Aemet updates weather forecast for the Canary Islands


The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has updated its weather forecast for the Canary Islands, announcing cloudy intervals with rain expected on the western islands this Sunday. Temperatures will remain stable, while winds from the southwest to the west will be occasionally strong, with very strong gusts on the high summits of La Palma and Tenerife, where gusts could reach up to 100 km/h. Winds are expected to ease later in the day, shifting to a northwesterly direction.


The marine forecast includes variable winds of force 1 to 3, shifting west at force 3 to 5 and strengthening to northwest at force 4 to 6. Moderate waves are expected with a swell from the north or northwest, bringing waves between 1 to 2 meters and occasional rain.

Cloudy intervals with a chance of light rain in the afternoon. Minimum temperatures will slightly decrease, with a moderate drop in maximum temperatures, particularly inland. Northwest winds will pick up strength during the central hours of the day.

Gran Canaria
General cloudy intervals, predominantly cloudy in the east by midday, where light to moderate rain showers are expected. Rain will be less likely and generally light in the north but cannot be ruled out elsewhere. Temperatures will see a slight to moderate drop, with a more noticeable decrease in highs in the midlands and peaks. Northwest winds will intensify along the southwest and northeast slopes during midday.

Tenerife
Cloudy intervals with the possibility of occasional light to moderate rain on the eastern slopes. Rain is less likely and will remain light in the north. Northwest winds will occasionally be strong on the western slopes during midday, with very strong gusts on the central summits, particularly early in the day.

La Gomera
Cloudy intervals with a low chance of light, occasional rain, mainly on the northern slopes. Temperatures will experience a slight to moderate drop, more significant in the midlands and peaks. Northwest winds will intensify on the southwest and northeast slopes during the central part of the day.

La Palma
General cloudy intervals, with more predominant clouds on the eastern side, bringing occasional scattered showers. Rain will be less likely in other areas. Temperatures will decrease slightly to moderately, especially in the mid-altitudes and peaks. Northwest winds will be stronger on the northeast and western slopes during midday.

El Hierro
Cloudy intervals with a low chance of light, occasional rain on the northern slopes. Temperatures will slightly to moderately decrease, more notably in the midlands and peaks. Northwest winds will strengthen on the northeast and southwest extremes during midday.

Residents and visitors are advised to prepare for changing weather conditions, particularly in exposed areas where strong winds and rainfall could cause disruptions.
