All Saints’ Day celebrations in Tenerife: Tradition meets Halloween in the south

Tenerife’s south celebrates All Saints' Day with a blend of traditional customs and Halloween festivities.

The south of Tenerife is ringing in All Saints’ Day today with a vibrant mix of traditional and Halloween-inspired activities. This blend of customs showcases both the island’s heritage and the growing influence of Halloween, now celebrated widely alongside traditional gatherings.

For All Saints’ Day, local cemeteries are open with extended hours to accommodate the many visitors expected. This annual preparation by municipal councils ensures that the community can honour its customs while also enjoying various festivities across the region.

In Arona, Halloween events are taking place in Valle San Lorenzo, Las Galletas, and Los Cristianos, where merchants’ associations and the town hall have teamed up to create a unique atmosphere with “terrifying leisure” options. Today in Valle San Lorenzo, visitors can enjoy a folk parade around the shopping area, followed by a themed workshop next to the chestnut stalls.

Adeje has organised activities starting at 18:00 today in the La Postura shopping area. Highlights include “tunnels of terror,” accessible via virtual reality glasses in Plaza La Concordia and atop the Tierra Lavada car park, along with make-up workshops and games for children. The local folklore group will also bring to life the dramatised route, Steps of Life and Death, in its third edition next Saturday, 9 November, at 19:30 in Plaza del Emigrante.

At 20:30, the cultural space El Secadero will stage the play Agarrando la muerte con las manos, performed by Juan Carlos Tacoronte and Piroska Duque.

Candelaria celebrates today with a series of 18 events focusing on Canarian customs related to death. Tonight in Plaza de Santa Ana, residents will gather for Noche de Finados, featuring traditional music, chestnut and gofio tastings, and performances of folklore scenes. Tomorrow and Saturday, Zona Joven Punta Larga will host Apocalipsis Kandel, an interactive event filled with “terrifying trials” and “macabre scenes” that promises an immersive experience.

These events across Tenerife offer both a celebration of heritage and a nod to modern festivities, creating a unique cultural fusion.
