The official inauguration of the Christmas lights in Santa Cruz de Tenerife will take place with Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez leading the switch-on ceremony on Thursday, 21 November. This year’s festivities are planned for the iconic Plaza de la Candelaria at 19:30, marking a return to this larger location to accommodate the expected crowd.
“We are creating a magical experience that will bring families together,” said Bermúdez, highlighting enhancements planned for this year’s display, including a higher number of lights and new decorations throughout the plaza.
Bermúdez emphasized that this inaugural lighting will be a historic moment for the city, as it celebrates the season with the first-ever Christmas Switch On event in Candelaria Square. He expressed excitement about transforming the square and main streets across Santa Cruz’s five districts into a vivid display of light and colour, aiming to captivate both residents and visitors.
The mayor will be joined by the Councillor for Festivities, Javier Caraballero, and First Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Public Services, Carlos Tarife, along with other members of the municipal corporation. Following remarks from the officials, a special show is set to thrill attendees before the highly anticipated lighting of the square and the rest of the city.
Javier Caraballero explained that the switch to Plaza de la Candelaria from the smaller Plaza del Príncipe is essential, given the immense public interest. Carlos Tarife added that planning for this year’s lighting has been underway since the summer, with several new features designed to enhance the experience and make it even more memorable than previous years.
