The best barraquito and zaperoco in northern Tenerife


La Orotava has crowned its champions in the first edition of the Gastronomic Contest “Mi Barraquito o Tu Zaperoco”, a celebration of these beloved Canarian coffee specialties. Held from 15 September to 15 October, the contest featured 30 local establishments and attracted nearly 1,750 participants, who cast their votes to determine the best barraquito and zaperoco in the region. Over 2,000 drinks were served during the event, showcasing the vibrant coffee culture of the area.


The Winners

  • Best Barraquito:
    Dulce Atardecer from Cafetería El Rincón del Pan earned the top spot in the barraquito category.
    • Second Place: Boutique Relieve’s “Barraquito Helado”
    • Third Place: Cafetería Fénix’s “Barraquito Fénix”
  • Best Zaperoco:
    Vegaroco from Café Breslau was crowned the best zaperoco.
    • Second Place: Churrería Nivaria’s “Especial Nivaria”
    • Third Place: Cafetería Liceo de Taoro’s “Zaperoco Liceo”

The competition, organised by the Department of Commerce of La Orotava, under the leadership of Deisy Ramos, aimed to celebrate local talent while promoting trade and tourism. Participants voted for their favourites through a dedicated app, with the added incentive of winning a stay for two at the Parador del Parque Nacional del Teide.

Award Ceremony

The winners were honoured in a ceremony held in the noble hall of the La Orotava Town Hall, attended by local authorities, including the mayor and the councillor for Commerce. They expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic reception of the initiative, which has become a significant event in the Canary Islands’ gastronomic scene.
